We’ve all seen the caricature of a messy office desk in movies, television…maybe even your own office. Some people will have you believe they are only organized when papers and files are piled two feet high or in neat little stacks on the floor.

In today’s world, unless you are a lawyer, this translates into a desktop filled with random files and folders so abundant you can’t see your child’s photo on your desktop wallpaper.

If this is how you’ve handled business up until now, you’ve been tricked into thinking your process is necessary. It isn’t. What you’ve done is developed a bad habit and have found ways to carry on with business despite this bad habit serving as an obstacle.

What you might want to try is the following:

Convert your office and desktop using principles found in Feng Shui. By eliminating chaos and replacing it with a flowing concept you will drastically increase your productivity levels while freeing up time normally spent sifting through countless files and folders.

Here are some tips to help you get started.

1. Clean up your desktop. Start by creating 2 main folders: Personal and Business. Those will be the only ones remaining on what was a cluttered mess.

2. Don’t be afraid to use your trashcan. You already know which files are not important enough to keep. Stop hoarding and get rid of them.

3. Clean up your actual workspace. Trust me, you don’t know how cluttered your mind is until you realize it’s been uncluttered.

4. If you have a laptop, get out of the house. You’d be surprised how a local park or café can spur productivity.

5. Nothing is instant. Once a week you should clean up your desktop mess. Eventually you won’t have to.

Business and life are inescapably intertwined. Treat both with respect and clarity and you’ll find success will soon follow
