Many years ago I filmed my healthcare class to show other docs how to implement an effective presentation for patient education.

It was called “Healthcare In The 21st Century”.

To this day, we help teach your Chiropractic Assistants how to run these for you.

We understand how important chiropractic patient education is to a successful practice, so we wanted to release the full version to you!

(Full Disclosure: this was filmed many many years ago and the quality of the video reflects that. Focus on the structure and content of the presentation to inspire your own healthcare class presentations.)

If you don’t have time to watch the entire presentation, here is the condensed version:

Today we’re focusing on What Health Is.

We’re going to start by outlining a broad definition of health and relating that back to your body. Then we’re going to talk about how chiropractic relates to your body health and how it can really play a key role in your life.

Defining Health:
– Nervous System
– Physically Active
– Nutrition
– Mental Capacity
– Wholeness

Can someone who isn’t physically active still be healthy? I have had patients who never do physical activities who are still alive. Whether or not they are “healthy” is still to be seen. Can you have bad nutrition but still be healthy? There are many paradoxes.

One of the most common things people look at when defining health is how they Feel.

“Well I feel good so I must be healthy”

And yet 57 times a day a patient walks into a health care provider and are told that the pain they felt is cancer. So how you feel is not always a good indicator.

The World Health Organization defines health as a complete state of physical, mental and social well being not merely the absence of disease.

There are two models of health care.

1. Crisis Care

If it’s not broke don’t fix it. It means if you feel good you must be healthy which is not always accurate. This can affect a lot of your health care decisions.

2. Wellness or Preventative Care

This means I’m not just going to see how I feel in the moment but focusing on your whole well-being. People look to find the optimal balance for their body.

I think it is our god-given right to be healthy. I think it is part of who we are but there are things in life that screw it up. Typically we see that people live in both care models. We brush our teeth daily for preventative care. We don’t exercise every day because we feel okay when we don’t and assume we will be good the next day as well.

There are 7 aspects of our lives and in the centre is health:

1. Family
2. Social
3. Mental
4. Financial
5. Physical
6. Career
7. Spiritual

How you live your life is all of these areas of life is a reflection of who you are on the inside and your belief system. They say that 95% of your belief system is developed by the time you are 12. You do have the ability to change this but there is a base.

I believe that health is the centre of our life because if it lacks then all the other areas of our lives will suffer too. Our health is something we take for granted until we don’t have it anymore… then we’ll do anything to get it back!

We know we should eat better and exercise more but we don’t! Because we have been taught to believe that if we feel good we are good. But cancer cells take 8-12 years to develop before you would feel anything. These things are a slow and long-term process. Once these symptoms are found it is hard to undo and we are fighting many years of decline.

There are four things you cannot live without in order to have a healthy baseline as a human:

1. Food
2. Water
3. Oxygen
4. Energy

For example, if we decrease the quality or quantity of water in our lives we will get sicker and our health will decline.

Now let’s look at energy. This is something that we cannot live without yet we know the least about it as a system in our body. The first three in the list make up our material aspects of our lives: our body. Energy is something we need to survive.

What is energy and what does it do?

If we take our energy system and turn it off then we just leave the planet. Our bodies were built to create and use energy. If we decrease the quality and quantity of energy in our bodies we would have less health. Although you would not feel that change right away, it would impact you later.

Chiropractic is, in essence, ensuring that your nervous system is working in an optimal state to ensure that energy is free flowing through your body. It ensures that your body is working the way it’s designed to.

I believe that if a person understands this threshold, I don’t see how a rational person could ever live in crisis mode. When we reduce the energy flow through the nerve system we weaken the overall system. However small amounts of reductions won’t impact the daily routine of a person so those living in a Crisis System won’t care. However, if you believe in being the best you can be then this minimal reduction would matter. As the longer the reduction goes on, the more long-term damage is done.

Within the Threshold concept, the body has finally said: “Tom wake up, something is not correct in the body.” This is an internal warning that something is not right in your body. I believe pain was put in the body by our creators as fail-safe that could be pain, agony or other alarms.

A lot of people think that they were fine yesterday but today their foot hurts so now there is a problem. However, that foot pain did not just manifest today. That is where the pain signal has passed the Threshold.

So we can live in a Crisis Care world and wait for the signals to come or we can live in a Wellness Care model where we are looking for overall mental, physical and social health to live our lives to the best of our abilities.

Remember it can take a lot of damage until we reach the pain threshold.

Live your life to the fullest and operate in a full mental, physical and social well-being model. Don’t wait for a crisis, live your life optimally and to the fullest.

Our office offers three types of care:

1. Initial Intensive Care

Beginning type of care where approximately 90% of our patients come to us after reaching a crisis point usually lasting weeks or months. The purpose is to help your body go back under the threshold so that your pain is gone. This does not mean that the cause is gone.

2. Reconstructive Care

This takes you to the next level. It takes months or years and will help take your body back to its optimal function.

3. Wellness Care

This is a true attempt at keeping the body working at its optimum as long as you want to be healthy. It works to ensure that our energy system does not have any reduction. This begins after your body is back at an optimal body.

Live your fullest life. Don’t wait for the pain messages. Have your body work optimally all the time.
